Vehicle Troubleshooting for Security Officers 

At the Start of Your Shift, fill out the Vehicle Inspection Form (VIF) 
 

Checking the Oil (Check Before Starting the Engine) 

  • Oil should not be low. 
  • If low, report to Dispatch and note on VIF. 
  • Dispatch will coordinate for oil purchase or service if oil is needed. 
  • If dashboard shows “Check Oil” or “Change Oil Soon”: 
  • Check oil levels using the dipstick. 
  • Send Dispatch a photo and brief report. 
  • Ensure the engine is cool (wait 30 minutes if recently used). 
     

Checking the Tires 

If dashboard shows “Tire Pressure Low”

  • Inspect tires physically: 
  • Use a tire pressure gauge (if available), kick tires, and perform a visual check. 
  • Report issues to Dispatch with a photo and brief report. 
  • Take vehicle to auto center (if available) or coordinate with Dispatch for repair or replacement. 
  • Purchase tires if needed and submit receipt for reimbursement. 
     

Checking the Lights 

  • Check all essential electronics
  • Headlights, turning signals, brake lights, overhead lights (blue and amber), and dashboard. 
  • If a light is out: 
  • Check housing, wires, and bulb for looseness. 
  • Report issues to Dispatch with a photo and brief report. 

Checking the Battery 

  • If lights are dim or vehicle won’t start
  • Check battery terminals for proper connection. 
  • Attempt to jump start the vehicle: 
  • Use jumper cables from personal vehicle or find assistance. 
  • Check for jumper cables in the back seat or trunk. 
  • If unsure, contact Dispatch or find a tutorial online. 
  • If jump start fails: 
  • Report to Dispatch with a photo and brief report. 
  • Coordinate with Dispatch for battery replacement. 
  • Purchase battery if needed and submit receipt for reimbursement. 
     

Checking for Fuel 

  • Never operate the vehicle on Empty
  • Ensure sufficient fuel for your shift. 
  • Pump the allotted amount of fuel. 
  • If the vehicle stops running or the wheel stiffens, check the fuel gauge. 
  • If nearing Empty, shut down the vehicle until refueled. 
  • Check fuel levels at the start of your shift as part of the VIF. 
  • If fueling up doesn’t help, report to Dispatch with a photo of the fuel gauge, receipts, and a brief report. 
     

Parking Properly 

  • At the end of your shift
  • If the vehicle stalls in an inappropriate spot, push it to a proper parking space. 
  • Do not double park; it may lead to towing and contract termination. 
  • Coordinate with Dispatch for assistance. 
  • Send Dispatch a photo showing the vehicle parked within the lines. 
  • Do not park in fire safety zones, block paths, intersections, entrances, or exits. 
  • Report any other issues to Dispatch with a photo and brief report. 

Locked or Lost Keys 

  • If keys are locked inside the vehicle
  • Contact a locksmith within 30 minutes. 
  • If unable to find a locksmith, notify Dispatch for assistance. 
  • Officer is responsible for damages/fees due to negligence. 
  • Follow up with Dispatch and send a photo of the keys in hand. 
  • If keys are lost
  • Retrace steps to locate keys within an hour. 
  • If keys are not found, report to Dispatch for a replacement set. 
  • Officer is responsible for damages/fees due to negligence.

Officers may be required to make purchases for vehicle maintenance, such as oil, tires, or batteries. Reimbursement will be provided upon submission of valid receipts, and all purchases must be pre-approved by Dispatch and management. 

Officers are responsible for any damages or fees incurred due to their negligence. This includes, but is not limited to, costs associated with double parking, improper vehicle operation, lost or locked keys, and failure to follow proper procedures. 

By adhering to these guidelines, officers can ensure the smooth operation of their vehicles and avoid unnecessary expenses.
